(Re) Constructing ‘Subservient’ Filipino Migrant Subjectivities

In the 1970s, Philippine state implemented a labour-export policy to alleviate country’s economic crisis. This centres needs of employers at expense rights and lives Filipino migrants. As consequence, many migrants find themselves in low-paying, precarious, exploitative working conditions. However, as foreign employment labour is tied state’s agenda, caught between protecting its citizens profits. this essay, I argue that constructs ‘docile’ ‘subservient’ migrant subjectivities serve neoliberal interests. Although, learn become acutely aware their exploitation, they re-construct subjectivity premised on challenging interests through help transnational activist groups. essay employs qualitative case study analysis Philippines’ foremost institution serving migrants, Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) largest group, Migrante International. use Critical Studies (FilCrit) framework analyze these studies. FilCrit recognizes institutionalization migration under US colonization largely influences how Filipinos are incorporated into global economy day. finds goals groups stems from opposing values. The concerned about while with migrants’ everyday lives.
